Science at Dawpool
At Dawpool CE, we want every child to develop a sense of wonder about the world around them, nurturing curiosity and a desire to discover how and why things happen. Inspired by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our science curriculum encourages children to recognise their God-given gifts, explore new ideas and develop the confidence to question, investigate and make sense of the world. Through an ambitious, inclusive and progressive curriculum, we build upon children's prior learning, enabling them to connect existing knowledge with new discoveries and develop an increasingly secure understanding of scientific concepts. We are committed to ensuring that every child, including those with SEND, has meaningful opportunities to participate, investigate and succeed, fostering a lifelong curiosity about the natural world and the role science plays in our everyday lives.
Our science curriculum is underpinned by five golden threads: scientific enquiry skills, working scientifically skills, living things and their habitats, materials and their properties, and physical processes, including forces, sound and light. Through practical investigations, careful observation and thoughtful questioning, children learn to explore possibilities, gather evidence, recognise patterns and draw conclusions. We encourage pupils to think critically, embrace challenges and understand that scientific knowledge develops through exploration, testing and reflection. By revisiting and deepening their learning over time, children make meaningful connections across scientific concepts and develop the skills to investigate increasingly complex questions independently. Rooted in our commitment to equity, stewardship and community, we inspire our pupils to appreciate the wonder and diversity of creation, use their knowledge responsibly and recognise their role in caring for the world around them. Ultimately, we aim to nurture curious, reflective and resilient young scientists who use their talents to enrich their understanding, contribute positively to society and experience the fullness of life in the wider world.
Golden threads
Implementation
We are following Plymouth Science scheme which provides a cohesive programme of study drawing on children’s prior knowledge and existing skills. It provides opportunities to work scientifically and to develop every child’s curiosity.
