Modern Foreign Languages at Dawpool

Modern Foreign Languages at Dawpool

Intent:

At Dawpool CE, we believe that learning another language opens doors to new friendships, experiences and ways of understanding the world. Inspired by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum encourages children to embrace linguistic and cultural diversity, recognise the value of every individual and use their God-given gifts to build meaningful connections with others. Through an engaging, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, we aim to spark a genuine enthusiasm for language learning, helping every child, including those with SEND, to develop the confidence to communicate, celebrate differences and appreciate the richness of the world beyond their own experiences. We want our children to be inspired by the languages and cultures they encounter, developing an open-minded outlook and a lasting commitment to valuing and celebrating others.

Our curriculum is woven around five golden threads: culture, communication and confidence, grammar and vocabulary, recalling language, and understanding others. Through exploring traditions, customs and everyday life in other countries, children develop an appreciation of cultural identity and the many ways in which people experience the world. We nurture confident communicators by providing opportunities to listen, speak, interact and express ideas in another language, while building a secure understanding of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Through regular opportunities to revisit, retrieve and apply previously learned language, children strengthen their knowledge and grow in confidence as linguists. We place understanding others at the heart of language learning, fostering empathy, respect and curiosity while challenging assumptions and celebrating the similarities and differences that make our world so rich. Ultimately, we want our children to become enthusiastic, respectful and confident linguists who use language to bring people together, celebrate diversity and contribute positively to their local and global communities, experiencing fullness of life in a world enriched by different languages and cultures.

Implementation:

In our Foundation Stage, children are introduced to a range of languages and cultures. This awareness is built upon and celebrated as they progress through the school. In Key Stage Two, children develop their language skills and deepen their understanding of Spanish culture through the Primary Languages Network scheme of work.
