Design Technology at Dawpool

Design Technology at Dawpool

Intent:

At Dawpool CE, we believe that Design and Technology empowers children to turn their ideas into reality, developing the creativity, curiosity and determination to solve problems and improve the world around them. Guided by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our bespoke Design and Technology curriculum inspires children to recognise their God-given gifts, embrace new challenges and discover their potential as designers, makers and innovators. Through meaningful, practical experiences, children learn that their ideas have value and that perseverance, imagination and collaboration can lead to purposeful solutions. We are committed to ensuring that every child, including those with SEND, has the opportunity to flourish, develop confidence in their abilities and feel inspired to create products that meet real needs and make a positive difference to the lives of others.

Our curriculum is underpinned by four golden threads: design, make, technical knowledge and evaluate. Children learn to identify problems, explore ideas and develop designs before selecting appropriate materials, tools and techniques to bring their creations to life. Through practical experiences, they build technical understanding, develop precision and learn to overcome challenges through resilience and creative thinking. By testing and evaluating their products, children reflect on their successes, identify improvements and appreciate the importance of designing with purpose. We encourage our pupils to consider the needs of others, make responsible choices and understand how thoughtful design can improve lives and care for God's creation. We want our children to be rooted in their values, inspired to innovate and committed to using their talents, skills and creativity to serve others and contribute positively to their community and the wider world.

Implementation:

To ensure that children are taught consistently to a high-standard, we use Plan Bee’s Design Technology Scheme of work, combined with the Art and Design curriculum on an alternating half-term basis. This means that children are able to draw on prior knowledge and skills which makes sure that learning is sequential and embedded.
