History at Dawpool

History at Dawpool

Intent

At Dawpool CE, we believe that exploring the past helps children to understand themselves, the world they live in and the people who have shaped it. Guided by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our bespoke History curriculum has been carefully designed around the needs and experiences of our children, inspiring them to discover significant people, places and events that have influenced the course of history. Through engaging and meaningful historical learning, we encourage children to ask questions about the past, challenge their thinking and recognise how the experiences, decisions and achievements of others continue to shape our lives today. We want every child, including those with SEND, to feel a sense of belonging within the wider human story, recognising that their own lives and choices can also make a difference. By bringing history to life, we aim to ignite curiosity, deepen understanding and inspire children to learn from the past as they shape their own futures.

Our curriculum is underpinned by four golden threads: power and leadership, understanding everyday life, understanding change and innovation, and historical enquiry and interpretation skills. Through the study of significant individuals, communities and civilisations, children explore how power has been gained and used, how leadership has influenced societies, and how the lives of ordinary people have changed over time. They investigate developments, inventions and turning points that have transformed the way people live, thinking critically about the causes and consequences of historical change. Through examining a range of sources, artefacts and historical interpretations, children learn to ask perceptive questions, consider different perspectives, evaluate evidence and develop their own informed understanding of the past. We encourage our pupils to recognise the diversity of human experiences, celebrate the achievements of others and reflect on the lessons history can teach us about fairness, courage, responsibility and compassion. Overall, we want our children to become curious, reflective and discerning historians who understand their place in the world, appreciate the experiences of those who came before them and use their own God-given gifts to make a positive difference in the future, experiencing fullness of life as responsible members of their local and global communities.

Implementation

We are using a bespoke curriculum which has been designed to let every child flourish. In our Early Years, History is taught through knowledge and understanding of the world. In KS1 and KS2, children undertake historical enquiries to explore significant people and events of the past, ask questions and develop their understanding of chronology.
