Art at Dawpool

Intent:

At Dawpool CE, we believe that art gives every child the opportunity to explore their creativity, discover more about themselves and share their unique perspective with others. Guided by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our bespoke Art curriculum inspires children to recognise their God-given gifts, develop their imagination and find their own artistic voice. Through exploring the work of diverse artists, cultures and creative movements, children discover how art can tell stories, communicate emotions, challenge perceptions and bring about positive change. We are committed to ensuring that every child, including those with SEND, feels valued and has the opportunity to flourish as an artist, developing the confidence to take creative risks, express their individuality and appreciate the power of art to give a voice to others.

Our curriculum is woven around four golden threads: explore and observe, create and express, develop skills and techniques, and evaluate and reflect. Children learn to look closely at the world around them, ask questions and draw inspiration from their surroundings, experiences and the work of other artists. Through experimenting with a range of materials, processes and techniques, they develop their artistic abilities and bring their ideas to life in increasingly thoughtful and ambitious ways. By evaluating their own work and reflecting on the work of others, children learn to celebrate different perspectives, recognise the value of creativity and understand how art can influence individuals and communities. We want our children to be rooted in a strong sense of identity and belonging, inspired to explore new possibilities and committed to using their talents creatively to celebrate diversity, enrich the lives of others and make a positive difference in the world around them.

Implementation:

To ensure that children are taught consistently to a high-standard, we use Plan Bee’s Art and Design Scheme of work, combined with the Design curriculum on an alternating half-term basis. This means that children are able to draw on prior knowledge and skills which makes sure that learning is sequential and embedded.
