Recommended Reading Lists
In his book ‘Reading Reconsidered’, Doug Lemov points out that there are five types of texts that children should have access to in order to successfully navigate reading with confidence. These texts are complex beyond a lexical level and demand more from the reader than other types of books:
- Books with archaic language.
- Books with non-linear time sequences
- Books that are narratively complex
- Books that have figurative/symbolic text
- Books that are resistant
Doug Lemov refers to these 5 types of text as the 5-plagues of reading.

Please find below a list of books which we will encourage Dawpool pupils to read as they progress through school. We may use these books as whole class reads, study books or take extracts from them to look at in greater detail. The idea is that in each year, a child will cover all 5 plagues of reading so that, by the time they reach year 6 and beyond, they have a good understanding of all of them and are able to access the more complex books expected of them in secondary schools. The children will also be exposed to a good balance of topic-appropriate non-fiction to further develop their background knowledge of the subject they are studying.
The list below includes recommended texts for all 5 plagues for:
- Years 1&2
- Years 3&4
- Years 5&6
