Geography at Dawpool
At Dawpool CE, we believe that Geography opens children's eyes to the wonder, diversity and interconnectedness of the world we live in. Guided by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our bespoke Geography curriculum has been carefully designed to reflect the experiences of our children, beginning with the area in which we live and gradually extending their understanding to the wider world. We want our children to feel rooted in their local community, inspired by the extraordinary places, people and environments they discover, and committed to making a positive difference to the world around them. Through meaningful learning experiences, we encourage pupils to develop a sense of place and belonging, recognise the beauty and complexity of God's creation, and appreciate their responsibility to care for it. We are committed to ensuring that every child, including those with SEND, can access rich geographical experiences that nurture curiosity, broaden horizons and enable them to flourish as confident, informed and thoughtful global citizens.
Our curriculum is underpinned by four golden threads: locational knowledge, map and fieldwork skills, understanding human and physical geography, and questioning and comparing the world. Beginning with our local area, children develop an understanding of where they live, the features that make their community distinctive and how it connects to places beyond their immediate experience. Through the progressive development of map-reading, navigation and fieldwork skills, pupils learn to observe their surroundings, gather information and use geographical evidence to deepen their understanding of different environments. They explore the relationship between people and the natural world, investigating physical processes, human activity and the ways in which places change over time. By questioning, investigating and comparing locations, landscapes and communities, children develop an appreciation of the similarities and differences that shape our world, challenging assumptions and developing respect for diverse ways of life. We encourage our pupils to look beyond their own experiences, think critically about global issues and recognise the importance of sustainability, stewardship and shared responsibility. We want our children to be rooted in an appreciation of their local community, inspired by the richness and diversity of the wider world, and committed to protecting and improving the places we share, using their God-given gifts to serve others and experience the fullness of life as responsible members of their local and global communities.
