Relationships Education & Health Education at Dawpool
Relationships and Health Education is compulsory in all primary schools.
To ensure that we further promote the personal wellbeing and development of all pupils we have integrated all statutory requirements in our RHE policy and curriculum content.
During the Summer term 2021, parents were introduced to all the new content through an online consultation process. The curriculum queries, opinions, and contributions received during the consultation enabled us to further develop and shape our bespoke curriculum offer.
The policy document and curriculum plans can be downloaded below together with statutory guidance and supporting information.
At Dawpool CE, we believe that every child deserves to feel valued, respected and equipped with the knowledge and confidence to flourish as an individual. Guided by our Christian vision and the Parable of the Talents, our RSHE curriculum supports children to understand themselves, build positive relationships and recognise the unique gifts they bring to our community. Through our use of No Outsiders, HeartSmart and a range of external workshops, assemblies and visiting speakers, we provide meaningful opportunities for children to explore different perspectives, ask questions and learn about themselves and others. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where every child, including those with SEND, feels that they belong, understands their worth and develops the confidence to make informed choices. By celebrating diversity, promoting respect and nurturing a strong sense of self, we inspire our children to recognise that they have the power to make a positive difference to the lives of others.
Our curriculum is underpinned by four golden threads: relationships and sex education, digital and media literacy, physical health and wellbeing, and emotional wellbeing. Children learn how to develop healthy relationships, understand personal boundaries and respect the rights, feelings and differences of others. Through exploring the influence of media and the digital world, they develop the skills to think critically, stay safe and make responsible choices. We support children to understand the importance of physical health, recognise and manage their emotions, and develop strategies to navigate life's challenges with resilience and confidence. External visitors and specialist workshops enrich learning, helping children connect classroom knowledge to real-life experiences and develop an understanding of the wider world. Rooted in our Christian values, we want our children to be inspired to care for themselves and others, committed to treating everyone with dignity and compassion, and confident in using their voices to stand up for what is right and contribute to a kind, respectful and inclusive community.

Implementation:
Our RSHE curriculum incorporates ‘Heartsmart’, ‘No Outsiders’, Internet Safety and a range of external workshops and assemblies that help our children to learn more about themselves and others.
To deliver the statutory RSHE & PSHE objectives, we use a range of resources which align closely with the school's Vision and Curriculum for Christ-Likeness.
HeartSmart is a creative resource that we use to build character, emotional health and resilience in children. It equips them with foundational principles, skills, habits and a mindset that will improve their mental health, relationships and academic achievement. Some aspects of Relationships and Health Education, including physical health and fitness, online relationships and internet safety and harms will be delivered through the Physical Education and Computing Curriculum. The statutory elements of sex education are covered as part of the KS2 science curriculum under the topic Animals Including Humans. This area of the curriculum is delivered to pupils in Years 5 & 6 and the planning can be downloaded above.
HeartSmart is delivered around 6 key topics:
-
